16 Things to Do in Scottsdale That are 100% Worth the Hype

mountains in the distance at sunset, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

I visit Arizona often, so I’m always on the hunt for the best things to do in Scottsdale. Given its year-round sunshine and abundance of restaurants, shops, wine tasting rooms, and world-class resorts, it’s the perfect escape from the Pacific Northwest…especially during our dreary winter season. Plus, it’s near some of the most iconic outdoor adventures in the United States.

So if you’re wondering what to do in Scottsdale, I’m sharing all my favorite activities in this roundup. There’s a little something for everyone no matter if you prefer lounging, hiking, eating, or all three. Get ready to add these fun activities to your Scottsdale bucket list!

This article is sponsored by Experience Scottsdale. However, I’ve been to Arizona before, so all thoughts about this gem of a city are my own. There may also be a few affiliate links in this article, which means I’ll earn a small commission at no cost to you if you click on them and make a purchase. 16 Things to Do in Scottsdale

Before diving into all the things to do in Scottsdale, let’s break down some need-to-know info that’ll be helpful while planning your Scottsdale itinerary.

Where is Scottsdale?

Scottsdale neighbors Phoenix, Arizona’s capital city. It’s in the heart of America’s southwest, so you’re surrounded by a beautiful arid landscape dotted with cacti and pops of colorful flowers.

It’s easy to get to Scottsdale from the Pacific Northwest via a 2-3 hour flight out of Seattle or Portland. You can often find flights from Seattle for as low as ~$59 each way! That’s why it’s one of my favorite weekend getaways when I want something a little different from Washington’s greenery and rain without spending a fortune.

Ride shares are readily available in Scottsdale once you arrive, so you can easily get around without a vehicle. However, I often rent a car since parking is always easy and you can get one for as low as ~$35 a day.

Is Scottsdale worth visiting?

1,000% yes, visiting Scottsdale is worth it. There is a ton to do in the city itself, plus it’s well connected for other adventures in Arizona like the Grand Canyon, Sedona, and countless outdoor experiences in the breathtaking Sonoran Desert. I also personally love that Scottsdale has a little bit of that luxury vacation feel with all its fancy resorts, but at the fraction of the cost and effort it takes to get to places like Hawaii or Mexico.

Another huge draw to Scottsdale is the ~314 days of sun and ~7.5″ annual rainfall. A trip to Scottsdale works any time of year, but an especially attractive time to visit for Pacific Northwesterners is from November through March when “the Big Dark” and rain season arrive in the upper left coast.

What to do in Scottsdale, AZ

Alright, now to the meat of why you came to this article: All the best things to do in Scottsdale, AZ! Save this to Pinterest for later, as I’ll keep adding more things to do in Scottsdale when I discover them!

Go shopping in Old Town

website | area: Old Town (get directions) | best for: art galleries, souvenirs, dining, and culture

Cowboy sculpture in Old Town Scottsdale

Old Town Scottsdale is the heart of the city, with 9 walkable districts full of hundreds of restaurants, bars, shops, and more. There are more than 50 art galleries alone! So Old Town is a shopper’s paradise.

As you comb the streets, keep an eye out for some of my favorite spots:

  • Rusty Spur Saloon – Bar inside a historic bank (they store booze in the vault!)
  • Old Adobe Mission– One of three historic adobe structures left in Old Town
  • Native Art Market – The only Indigenous-owned shop in the area
  • Bischoff’s Shades of the West – Huge curator of handmade southwest goods
  • Yellow Spruce – Excellent coffee roaster with fun drinks and a wine bar
  • Old Town Farmers Market – Saturdays mornings October through June
  • Schmooze – Dreamy coffee shop with a garden patio
  • Růže Cake House – Insta-worthy dessert shop (next to great art galleries!)
  • Berdena’s – Coffee shop with a cult following

Seek out public art

There are more than 45 public art installations scattered throughout Old Town’s 9 different districts. Here is a walking guide for exploring 10 of the most popular structures.

If you’d like a guided tour with narration about each art piece, consider booking a tour with JoyRidesAZ. They take you around in a cute golf-cart-like electric vehicle so you can get great photos from any angle.

Visit a museum

Scottsdale has quite a few museums, such as the popular Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. There are even more in the area if you count the ones a short drive away in Phoenix, like the popular Musical Instrument Museum and The Heard Museum. I haven’t had a chance to visit all of them yet, but here are two of my favorites not to miss.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art

website | area: Civic Center (get directions) | price: ~$10-13pp, free for 18 and under everyday or for everyone on Thursdays | best for: modern art

Piece from Casey Curran’s “Tidal Sky” collection at SMoCA

Visiting SMoCA is one of my favorite things to do in Scottsdale. It’s small, so you can explore it in just an hour or so, but it has 6-8 really well-curated rotating exhibits featuring contemporary art, architecture, and design. The building itself is really cool, too. It’s actually a former movie theater!

When I last visited, SMoCA was actually featuring a few Pacific Northwest artists! One favorite was the “Tidal Sky” exhibit from Washington-born Casey Curran. It features incredibly intricate 3D structures that visitors are encouraged to move by turning a crank. There’s a devastating beauty to each piece because they look almost skeletal, yet in striking or gilded colors like gold, blue, and pearlescent white. This is on purpose, as the exhibit explores hope beyond global themes like climate anxiety, political uncertainty, and the pandemic.

When you visit, don’t miss James Turrell’s breathtaking Skyspace, “Knight Rise“, which is one of dozens around the world he created. He’s considered a master of light because he’s able to build architectural structures that capture sunlight in interesting patterns. A local was actually visiting with his pup when we were last there and he told us we had to take this iconic photo using the panorama setting on our phone!

Wonderspaces Arizona

website | area: Fashion Square (get directions) | price: ~$15-50pp, kids under 3 free | best for: immersive sound and light installations

Wonderspaces Arizona is an art experience inside the most unexpected place: Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall. Yet it feels a world away as you’re transported into an interactive art playhouse featuring ~14 rotating exhibits and a full bar.

For example, watch a bunch of mini Flip-Discs move to the shape of your body as you explore the kinetic artwork of Portraits in Pink, Blue, and Silver by BREAKFAST Studio. Or get fully immersed by sound and light moving in rhythm to the beats in the exhibit “Volumen” by Filip Roca. As you explore, make sure to have your camera ready because there will be seemingly-endless photo opportunities!

Enjoy some wine tasting

Did you know Arizona has a winemaking industry? I had no idea either before my first visit, as I just assumed it’d be too hot for grapes to thrive. However, the Verde Valley AVA isn’t that much further south from popular wine regions in Italy, Spain, and Portugal. So the area is able to make some truly great wines.

While Arizona’s wine-growing regions are a 2-3-hour drive from Scottsdale, you can try the wine from a lot of the area’s wineries at their tasting rooms scattered around Old Town. Scottsdale has a wine trail map, but here are some of my favorites:

  • Los Milics Vineyards – Latin-owned with hands down my favorite wines using unique varietals
  • Aridus Wine Co – Family-owned with complex and balanced reds
  • LDV Winery – Family-owned with single-varietal, Rhone-style wines

Make your own cowboy, ranch, or trucker hat

website | area: Old Town (get directions) | price: ~$200pp | best for: unique, bespoke souvenir

cowboy hat branded with the word "rowdy" and a hat wall behind it

I’ll be honest, I thought making my own cowboy hat was going to be cheesy and result in something I’d never wear. But Mavericks of Scottsdale completely changed my mind after taking me through their custom hat bar experience.

Here’s how it works: You pick a hat from the hat wall, which has a range of cowboy, ranch, and trucker hats. Then you pick accessories and watch them customize your hat. You can even have them brand your hat! There are a ton of finished hats for inspiration, including some they’re actively making for celebrities. For example, the staff pointed out one they were about to ship to Machine Gun Kelly!

I’m not really a glitzy person and so I thought I’d barely use any accessories, but they have so many options. I ended up choosing a really cool belt trim, minimalist ribbon, and the most adorable dried flowers. Of course I couldn’t resist branding my hat, so I put a pine tree flanked by two mountains on the back as a nod to the Pacific Northwest and my brand.

Mavericks of Scottsdale, a western clothing and lifestyle store with a custom hat bar

The best part of the experience was how patient the staff was with my indecisiveness. 😂 I knew I wouldn’t wear a traditional cowboy hat, so they kept ironing the brim to make it less and less upturned as I tried it on repeatedly. The final brim ended up being completely flat like a ranch hat, which is more my style. I’ve already worn it multiple times since my Arizona trip, so this is one of the best things to do in Scottsdale! If you don’t have time to make your own hat, Mavericks has a big store in front with pre-made options alongside other western goods.

Go on a bike tour

website | price: ~$125pp | best for: covering more sightseeing

Scottsdale has ~105 miles of paved pathways. That increases to ~384 miles when you factor in bike lanes and paved shoulders. Since the city is quite flat, it’s perfect for exploring by bike.

While you can rent bikes and explore on your own, I prefer tours so you don’t need to worry about navigating and can get a narrated story from a local at points of interest. I took the Old Town Scottsdale & Water Ways Guided E-Bike Tour with Cliff Creek Outfitters, a local tour company that offers a bunch of biking and hiking tours around the greater Scottsdale area.

person biking along a path, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

Our tour guide, Charles, picked us up at our hotel and led the way through beautiful neighborhoods and green spaces for ~2.5 hours. It was interesting learning how Scottsdale’s waterway system is designed to handle flooding. It may not rain much, but when it does, it usually comes hard and fast. So the city leveraged canals that were first dug by Indigenous peoples in the 1400s for their farms, and then later restored in the 1800s to feed miners during the gold rush.

Soleri Bridge, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

We also rode the canal along Scottsdale’s waterfront and saw the iconic Soleri Bridge designed by Paolo Soleri, an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright who parted ways to explore more organic shapes. The pedestrian bridge is actually a solar calendar! It’s little facts like these that I would have never learned if it wasn’t for a tour, so definitely add this to your list of things to do in Scottsdale.

Visit the Desert Botanical Garden

website | area: south Scottsdale (get directions) | price: ~$20-40pp, kids under 3 free | best for: scenic walk among gardens

view of the landscape at the Desert Botanical Garden, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

You should see me when I visit Arizona. I’m constantly gushing about all the cacti and marveling at all my little plant babies’ relatives in the wild. There’s no better place to see them than at the Desert Botanical Garden.

This attraction is an oasis for plant and nature lovers. There are miles of trails that meander through different garden concepts featuring 50,000 different plants. For example, the Sonoran Desert Nature Trail takes you through looming saguaro cacti. The Desert Wildflower Trail has colorful flowers that attract bees, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

Speaking of butterflies, my favorite exhibit at the Desert Botanical Garden is the Butterfly Pavilion. It’s an indoor greenhouse with thousands of butterflies, making for magical photos and moments!

The Desert Botanical Garden’s event calendar is always stacked. They have traveling exhibits, like the interactive “FRAMERATE: Desert Pulse” installation that was there when I went, which featured thousands of pictures showing the movement of cacti as they grow. They also have seasonal events like Las Noches de las Luminarias during Christmas, yoga in the garden, and more. Make sure to check the calendar before you visit!

Want to see more butterflies? Butterfly Wonderland is another option in Scottsdale. It’s located within the Arizona Boardwalk entertainment center along with the Odysea Aquarium and other family-friendly activities.

Paddle or float the Salt River

website | area: Mesa (get directions) | price: ~$51-60pp | best for: gentle exercise among a beautiful landscape

Just ~45 minutes from Scottsdale is Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch. Nestled in Tonto National Forest along the Salt River, it’s the perfect spot to experience the breathtaking Sonoran Desert.

people kayaking on the Salt River with the mountains in the distance, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

Visitors don’t need to stay at the ranch’s cabins to take advantage of their horseback tours or kayak and tubing rentals. We did their 2.5-hour unguided Salt River Kayaking Foxtail Trip. It started at the ranch where we got equipment and a brief demonstration on how to kayak. Then our group ventured into the river while the staff waved goodbye and we paddled below thousand-foot cliffs dotted with saguaro cacti.

The scenery was absolutely jaw dropping. We saw herons and even a wild horse! The water was mostly gentle with a few thrilling, yet still mild rapids. We shared the river at one point with a lot of tubers, which made it feel like we were part of their party!

When we saw the Foxtail exit, we brought our kayaks to shore and got a ride back from the ranch staff. This ended up being one of my favorite activities during our last trip, so definitely add this to your itinerary if you want to get a taste of nature just outside Scottsdale!

Seek out a speakeasy cocktail bar

website | area: north Scottsdale (get directions) | price: ~$10pp cover charge | best for: 1920s glam and live music

The city’s myriad of creative bars are a big draw, especially the speakeasy-style spots with hidden entrances and fun theatrical flare. One of my favorites is Tell Your Friends.

inside a speakeasy bar with a huge geometric light installation giving it art deco vibes, one of the best things to do in Scottsdale, Arizona

TYF is a swanky underground jazz and cocktail bar in the basement of The Americano restaurant. As soon as you descend the stairs and enter the space, you’ll be met with breathtaking 1920s art deco interiors. The bar has an architectural light installation that draws your eye to the stage across from it, where you can enjoy live music every Thursday through Sunday night. When we went Sassy & the Sneak Attack was playing cool jazz covers of classics like Nirvana, Beyonce, and more. It was a vibe!

Since TYF is the brainchild of local celebrity chef, Beau MacMillan, and beverage consultant, Kiefer Gilbert, you can expect really good food and drinks. I got a cocktail called Bad Blood with beet juice and gin that was really well balanced and earthy. We had just come from dinner so only got some snacks, but I keep thinking about the house-made chips with caramelized onion dip. Definitely make sure that ends up on your table!

Relax at a fancy resort pool

website | area: Gainey Ranch (get directions) | price: ~$250/nt or ~$37+ per day | best for: relaxation and ambiance

One of my favorite things to do in Scottsdale is carve out some time to lounge at one of its fancy resort pools and pretend I’m living the Rockefeller lifestyle (but not on that budget). I highly recommend you do the same because it does wonders for your soul. And the best part, you can get a resort pass to visit for the day if you’re not staying at the hotel!

resort pool with a large slide in Scottsdale

Scottsdale has more than 75 hotels and resorts within its city limits and the surrounding area. One of my favorites is the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort. It sits right on a golf course with the majestic McDowell Mountains in the distance and has multiple acres to explore. You’ll find a water playground with 10 pools, a mini sand beach, and high-speed waterslide. There’s also a fitness center, tennis facility, access to miles of jogging and bicycle paths, plus a full calendar of events. So there’s a lot to do!

I recommend spending a few hours by the pool and ordering fancy cocktails from H2Oasis. The staff will come right to your lounge chair, so it feels quite luxurious! You can also order food from the pool bar, but if you want a sit-down meal, there are a bunch of onsite restaurants. The best part? They’re concepts from Richard Blais, the celebrity chef of Top Chef fame.

We ate at Tiki Taka and Mesa Centrale. Tiki Taka is a Japanese-meets-Spanish tapas bar with yummy small plates like spicy tuna over crispy rice and octopus with shishito peppers and mandarin. Mesa Centrale is an American southwest grill that makes a killer huevos rancheros if you go for breakfast! Whichever one you choose, be ready for pretty plating in true Richard Blais style.

Get a spa treatment

website | area: Gainey Ranch (get directions) | price: ~$85+ per treatment | best for: relaxation and pampering

Scottsdale has nearly as many spas as they do resorts. One of the best I’ve been to is the award-winning Spa Avania inside the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale Resort. Not only did the massage I receive literally put me to sleep, but the facilities are absolutely gorgeous.

steps leading into a serene pool surrounded by palm trees at a Scottsdale, Arizona spa

There are multiple relaxation areas, some co-ed and others women only. For example, the women-only section has a hot tub, cold plunge, and shower in a little courtyard surrounded by lush landscaping. The relaxation room where you meet your therapist for your treatment has comfy chairs to read and a mini bar with water, tea, nuts, and cookies.

But the most breathtaking area of the spa is the private outdoor co-ed pool. It’s surrounded by waterscapes and lounge chairs. There’s even a little pond with lily pads that make it feel all the more serene. It’s the perfect spot to order lunch and spend the day relaxing between treatments!

Eat at the best restaurants

Going out to eat in Scottsdale is one of my favorite activities. The city has ~1,000 restaurants, many award winning, so there’s a lot to choose from!

I have a whole article on unique restaurants in Scottsdale AZ, but here are some of my favorites.

Cafe Monarch

website | area: Arts District (get directions) | cuisine: farm to table | best for: fancy meal in an old design showroom

inside a beautiful, elegant Scottsdale restaurant with chandeliers, crown molding, and candles

If you love interior design, Cafe Monarch is a must. It’s inside an old interior design showroom that exudes old world elegance. You’ll find marble columns, chandeliers, and a bunch of other design elements that’d be fitting in a European manor. There’s even free valet parking and a romantic back patio that’s straight out of the movie, Secret Garden!

The food is just as elegant as the ambiance. Cafe Monarch only offers a 4- or 8-course tasting menu that runs ~$165-290pp, but they also allow you to customize your meal with add-ons. There’s also a wine and non-alcoholic pairing option, as well as a full bar.

outdoor patio that looks like a garden at one of the most unique Scottsdale restaurants

We got the 4-course meal with one add-on and loved every single dish. Highlights included a venison dish with huckleberry crumble that whisked me home to the Pacific Northwest. There was also a zippy passionfruit aguachile shrimp, comforting fruit de mare pasta, well-spiced Spanish-style octopus, and sweet and spicy shrimp with pineapple.

The menu changes regularly, so what’s available when you visit will likely be different. However, there are a few staples like Cafe Monarch’s off-menu creamy truffled cauliflower soup that is one of the best soups I’ve ever had. They also had homemade pretzel bread and butter that left me low key eating butter off the knife. All in all, Cafe Monarch is a must visit!

The Ends

website | area: 5th Ave (get directions) | cuisine: American | best for: eclectic shareable plates

The Ends, an acronym for “The Energy Never Dies,” is a posh restaurant that’s always buzzing with a lively crowd. It’s inspired by Anthony Bourdain’s mission to visit the ends of the earth to experience the world’s best food with no pretentiousness. The result is an eclectic menu filled with dishes perfect for sharing with friends. And fun fact, The Ends only cooks with tallow instead of seed oils!

We all know a night out with friends invariably includes drinks, which can be difficult for those not imbibing in alcohol. The Ends has an all-around fantastic cocktail program, but what makes it extra special is their commitment to providing non-alcoholic options. So no need to just sip a soda…The Ends also has creative mocktails!

Ensuring everyone has a good time extends beyond The Ends’ menu, too. I can’t get over how good the service is here. Our server gave us insider tips on how the staff likes to curate the menu during off hours. For example, she recommended ordering the Hamachi Crudo and the Crispy Egg Yolk Nigiri so that we could dip the fish into the jammy egg yolk. It was a revelation of textures we would have never thought to try on our own.

Another must-try dish is Tommy’s Biscuits, which are served with homemade butter and fermented honey. Our server also told us we had to get the bone marrow and crab ravioli, two specials that may not be available when you visit. But the moral of the story is to trust your server, as they’ll make sure you get the best dishes!

Andreoli Italian Grocer

website | area: north Scottsdale (get directions) | cuisine: Italian | best for: old school, authentic Italian

rotini pasta ragu with sandwiches in the back from one of the most unique restaurants in Scottsdale

As someone growing up in an Italian American family on the east coast, I can tell you Andreoli Italian Grocer is legit. It’s a restaurant and deli serving authentic Italian sandwiches, pastas, entrees, and desserts. There will likely be families speaking Italian at tables around you in a space that screams nonna chic. It’s both casual, yet cozy, so it’s good for a quick lunch or romantic meal out.

Definitely get the Bastardo sandwich with salami, pecorino, and tapenade. It’s so simple, but the ingredients are high quality and well balanced. I especially love the bread because it’s chewy and yeasty.

You also shouldn’t miss their pasta. The Fusilli with Rib Meat comes with a pork rib ragu that tastes like it’s been cooked all day. It has deep umami flavors and the shredded meat gets caught in the pasta so you get the perfect forkful with each bite.

Diego Pops

website | area: Old Town (get directions) | cuisine: Mexican | best for: tacos and vibes

Diego Pops is a lively restaurant with a stylish outdoor patio perfect for sipping margaritas. The menu features modern Mexican food served with a tropical and cosmopolitan twist. You’ll find shareable dishes like guacamole and nachos, but with quirky takes like Brussel sprouts on the nachos.

Don’t miss the tacos, which come as singles so you can mix and match. The crispy fried cod taco, shredded machaca beef, and slightly-sweet al pastor pork are some of my favorites!

True Food Market

website | area: north Scottsdale (get directions) | cuisine: American meats southwestern | best for: quick, healthy-leaning dishes

Sometimes you just want a quick meal that doesn’t make you feel super full afterwards. That’s where True Food Market really shines. It’s a casual, healthy-leaning cafe with bowls, salads, sandwiches, and grab-and-go items. Since it’s owned by True Food Kitchen, a Scottsdale staple for using high-quality ingredients to create unfussy food, locals flock here at all times of day.

The Southwest Bowl is a great choice with yummy quinoa, black beans, sautéed peppers and onions, corn elote, and avocado. It’s even heartier if you add grilled chicken.

My favorite dish is the Buffalo Cris’p Chicken. I’m not typically a big buffalo flavor fan, so I like how this version is light on the sauce and balanced with a zingy apple slaw. When washed down with True Food Market’s homemade dragonfruit lemonade, it’s a super satisfying meal!

SugarJam

website | area: north Scottsdale (get directions) | cuisine: southern | best for: soul food

If you love dining at restaurants that feel like a party, SugarJam is it. This Black-owned restaurant is an all day brunch spot serving comforting southern classics like chicken and waffles, catfish, and more alongside fun mimosas and drinks that make any day feel like a celebration. But the good times aren’t just provided through the menu. The walls are adorned with colorful murals and there’s old school R&B music you can’t help but sing along to.

Food wise, don’t miss the shrimp and grits. The grits are cheesy, yet the perfect consistency so they still feel light. The spices on the shrimp add great depth and just a touch of heat. Or get the crispy fried chicken and waffles. You’ll leave feeling like you just enjoyed a hearty meal made with love at your grandmother’s house!

Daily Dose Bar & Grill

website | area: Old Town (get directions) | cuisine: American breakfast | best for: greasy spoon classics

Daily Dose Bar & Grill is known as a go-to for that quintessential all-American breakfast made from scratch. You’ll find hearty dishes like cinnamon roll pancakes, breakfast nachos, banana bread french toast, and their famous Hangover Sandwich. If you’re ready to keep the party going, they also have a full bar with creative cocktails like spicy watermelon margarita and bacon bloody Mary.

One classic dish Daily Dose does especially well is corned beef hash. It’s made with succulent shredded meat and well-cooked potatoes. With a runny egg on top, it feels like a comforting hug with every bite.

Go on a hike

One of the things I love about Scottsdale is just how similar it is to the Pacific Northwest when it comes to an appreciation for the outdoors. There are tons of hiking trails to choose from to explore the stunning Sonoran Desert, Camelback Mountain, and McDowell Sonoran Preserve. In fact, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is the largest urban wilderness area in the US, with more than 230 miles of trails!

Here are some trails to consider:

  • Gateway Loop Trail – Flat ~4.4-mile trail in McDowell Sonoran Preserve
  • Papago Park – Tons of trails such as the ~0.3-mile Hole in the Rock trail
  • Cholla Trailhead – Expert-level hike up Camelback Mountain with epic views
  • Treasure Loop Trail – Easy ~2.5-mile hike in the Superstition Mountains at Lost Dutchman State Park

Take a hot air balloon ride

There’s no better place to see the desert landscape than from above during a hot air balloon ride. It’s a bucket list adventure that’s one of the best things to do in Scottsdale! There are a few tour companies to choose from, such as:

  • Hot Air Expeditions
  • Rainbow Ryders

I went with Hot Air Expeditions and have sent a few of my travel planning clients to Rainbow Ryders. Whichever you choose, you can book a ride either at sunrise or sunset for ~$175-300pp and expect to spend about 45-60 minutes in the air. Some options also include a champagne toast and/or breakfast. If you’re nervous, know I’ve taken 4 hot air balloon rides in my life and each one was gentle and not scary at all!

Besides the actual ride, though, watching the hot air balloons get blown up is super magical. It really makes you appreciate these giant majestic vessels that help you see the world from a different perspective. So make sure to get to your appointment early for great photo opportunities.

Gawk at Taliesin West

website | area: north Scottsdale (get directions) | price: ~$19-44pp | best for: architecture buffs

Frank Lloyd Wright is the famous architect best known for helping shape the mid century modern movement. His career spanned more than 70 years and he designed hundreds of buildings, including the iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York and Fallingwater in Pennsylvania.

Taliesin West was his desert laboratory, where he and his apprentices lived, worked, and innovated. You can visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site and take either a self-guided audio tour or guided behind-the-scenes tour of the stunning property. They even offer hikes throughout the surrounding foothills of the McDowell Mountains! Whatever option you choose, get ready to dive into this genius’ world of architecture.

Catch a spring training baseball game

Given Scottsdale’s year-round sunshine, 15 baseball teams come to the area between February and March for spring training. It’s a great way to enjoy America’s favorite pastime in a more intimate setting than the regular season. Plus there are more opportunities to interact with players and coaches, as you can also attend their practices.

There are two primary spots to catch games and practices:

  • Scottsdale Stadium in Old Town where the San Francisco Giants play
  • Salt River Fields in central Scottsdale, within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, where the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies play

The Salt River Fields stadium is built on Native American land, so there’s a lot of heritage throughout the space. They even offer free shuttles between the stadium and nearby Talking Stick Resort & Casino!
