Description

What you get in these self-guided food tours

After you purchase these guides, you’ll be able to download 3 mobile-friendly PDFs with all of the following:

  • A self-guided itinerary for visiting the 25 best restaurants in Ballard, Fremont, and Georgetown
  • A map to help you get a sense of where everything is
  • 40+ additional “worthy mentions” to help you customize your tour
  • Recommendations of what to order and how to avoid crowds
  • Interviews with my favorite restaurants
  • Drool-worthy food photos to help you know what to expect
  • Ideas for non-eating activities to do between eats
  • Tips for how to get to each neighborhood and the best time to visit
  • A look inside each area’s historic past

You can expect to cover about 5 miles over the course of about 16 hours, which should give you time to explore the neighborhoods between eats over the course of 2-3 days and visit the 5 restaurants only open for dinner and 4 restaurants only open for lunch. Note you can easily visit both Ballard and Fremont in one day, but doing all the stops from both tours would be too much food.

In Fremont, the route is ~2.3 miles and is mostly flat except for a ~0.5 mile stretch uphill. You can easily avoid this hill if you hop on a bus.

In Ballard, the route is 1 mile and completely flat. There is about a 1-mile distance between downtown Fremont and Ballard, which you can easily get between by using a taxi, bike, or hopping on the 40 bus that connects the two neighborhoods.

In Georgetown, the route is 1 mile and completely flat. You’ll need to take a taxi to get to this neighborhood in South Seattle. You can also take the bus, but it’ll require a transfer.

The benefits of a self-guided tour

  • You’ll avoid looking like a tourist
  • It’s more affordable
  • You pay restaurants directly (no one takes a cut)
  • You can go at your own pace and customize stops
  • You don’t have to make small talk with strangers
  • It has the best spots, not just ones that take groups

About the neighborhoods

All the guide books will tell you to visit Downtown Seattle. But insiders know the best way to experience Seattle is through its surrounding neighborhoods.

Ballard, Fremont, and Georgetown are the three neighborhoods I tell all visitors to check out. They have some of the best food and aren’t overrun with tourists. Instead, you’ll be among locals while exploring independent shops, James Beard-winning restaurants, trendy bars, and some of the most beautiful water views and trails in the city. These neighborhoods also happen to have excellent farmers markets and fleas, which make them the perfect trio for exploring Seattle like a local.

About your guide

owner of Emerald Palate eating pokeHi I’m Adria! I help people discover the best flavors, makers, and unique adventures in the Pacific Northwest through travel guides, food tours, and small group tours.

Seattle has been my home for almost 15 years, which means I know where to find the best eats. And since I care deeply about small businesses, I decided to create self-guided walking tours to connect you with my favorites.

I considered hosting in-person Seattle walking tours, but I discovered some things about the industry that made me uncomfortable.

First, there’s an issue with some food tour companies trying to get discounts from restaurants with promises of “exposure”. Second, tours tend to cater to large groups. As a result, some businesses aren’t willing to work with food tours.

To better align with my values of supporting small businesses and authentically sharing the best of the best, I decided to offer self-guided walking tours of Seattle instead. I hope you love them as much as I do, and take pride knowing you are supporting small businesses directly.

FAQS

How much food can I expect on these walking tours?

Tons! The benefit of a self-guided tour is you can customize the itinerary to eat as much or as little food as you want. Each tour has 8-9 stops and assumes at least 4 hungry adults attend. However, I’ve taken one of the tours with only one other person and got through it all by splitting everything and taking some leftovers home.

You’ll also get 12-14 honorable mentions per guide so you can try even more places if you’re in a large group. Since this is self-guided, you’ll get full-sized portions when you order. So start hungry!

Are there any alcoholic beverages?

Oh yes! I include one bar on each itinerary and most of the restaurant serve alcoholic drinks. There are also mocktail options if you aren't drinking.

Are these walking tour good for all ages?

They are! However, I’d recommend skipping the one bar on each itinerary and swapping it with one of the honorable mentions instead. Also note there are a few fancier restaurants that don't have kids menus.

How physically fit do I need to be for these walking tours?

The Fremont tour has one 0.5 mile uphill climb, so if you plan to walk you need to be pretty fit. However, there are buses that take you up this hill. Without this hill, it’s about 1.8 miles of walking on flat ground with plenty of stops to eat and shop!

The Ballard and Georgetown tours are about 1 to 1.5 miles and on flat roads, so it's easy for most people. Plus, the best part of a self-guided food tour is you can go at your own pace!

What if I have allergies or dietary restrictions?

While the recommended dishes on these tours do not take into account any specific dietary restrictions, you’ll find a mix of meat, vegetarian, and gluten free options. And the best part is you can order whatever you want at these restaurants because this is a self-guided walking tour!

How much money can I expect to spend on these tours?

If you order all the recommended dishes on all 3 walking tours, you’ll spend about $630 not including tax or gratuity. If you’re taking this with 4 other person, that’s about $157.50 per person. And since you're buying 3 guides with the bundle there is no way you can eat all the dishes in all the guides in one day, so you'll have multiple days of foodie adventures!

Since this is self-guided, you can mix and match your itinerary to fit any budget. Most dishes recommended are under $20-$25, with a few pricier options at the nicer restaurants.

Should I make reservations to the restaurants on these tours?

There are a few I recommend that you do, yes. I note which ones in the guides so you can plan ahead! However, most stops don’t need reservations.

Did businesses pay to be included in these tours?

Absolutely not. I believe strongly that the best food tours include stops that a local would tell their best friends to visit. That means they shouldn’t be recommended places that give them kickbacks!

Can I bring my dog on these tours?

Yes! Since this is self-guided, you can bring your furry friend along. Some restaurants will allow them inside, but for those that won’t, there are plenty of places to tie them up outside.

Can I get a refund?

Unfortunately no. Hopefully you’ll find this jam packed with enough recommendations and insider tips that you’ll think it’s worth the nominal fee that compensates me for my time putting it together!

Can I share this with others after I buy it?

I’d really appreciate if you didn’t. It took me more than 80 hours to put this guide together and the small fee I charge compensates me for that effort. Just as I’m trying to help small businesses grow by featuring them in this guide, I hope you’ll help me grow by not sharing this with others unless you buy it as a gift.

Can you host an in-person tour?

I'm not hosting tours at this time, but I host in-person overnight small group tours to foodie destinations around Washington from time to time. Join me on those for a food trip you’ll never forget!

Can you customize the tour?

Absolutely! I offer personal travel planning services for more than just food tours, but am happy to hone in on a food crawl if you'd like.

We purchased this bundle before spending some time in Seattle and were so happy that we did! We love checking out the best restaurants while traveling but had so many different things to plan during our travels that I hadn’t gotten to researching all of the restaurants and this guide took care of it all for us. Love how flexible the tours are and you can easily adjust the tour to fit the time of your visit and your personal preferences. Also really appreciated how easily walkable a lot of the stops were. Glad to be able to feel like we were experiencing some of the best food in a neighborhood just like a local would without spending a crazy amount of time doing research etc. Each stop we did was amazing, would highly recommend for anyone traveling to Seattle!!

I purchased the food tour bundle and they have been incredibly helpful in choosing restaurants in different neighborhoods around Seattle. Being a frequent “foodie”, the food guides have added even more of a positive experience to dining out. It’s so fun to have a little study guide before I make my choices and it really helps me maximize my dining experience. The food tour guides have even helped build connections with other foodies or restaurant staff. It’s seriously so fun! Highly recommend.

The books are so detailed and helpful! I’ve lived in Seattle for 5 years and it was fun to feel like a tourist again in some of my favorite neighborhoods. I also had some technical difficulties and wasn’t able to access a guide when I needed it so I reached out to Adria and she helped me out quickly! Great product, great customer service
